Frequently Asked Questions
Coaching
-
Individuals, leaders, and organisations – for profit and not for profit who are seeking change or growth and are looking for a committed guide and partner, to support and hold clients accountable to shape, map, navigate, and achieve desired transformative change.
-
Coaching is a focused series of conversations that support change, growth, and development in pursuit of maximising personal or team functioning and performance and achieving best self.
It is a respectful and confidential partnership between a coach and client. This relationship assists the client to identify what is holding them back and empowers them to step into what they most want, accessing internal and external resources to make positive and meaningful change.
What is unique about coaching relative to other disciplines, such as therapy or mentoring, is its usage of the following:
An equal partnership between coach-coachee
An assumption that the individual is already resourceful and capable — not “broken” nor “deficient”
Skilled questioning and listening techniques by the coach to elicit self-discovered insight in the client, rather than giving advice or guidance
A goal-orientation focused on achieving observable outcomes
Coaching is a sequential and iterative process consisting of clarification of purpose, values, beliefs, skills, strengths, options, and resources.
As the client, you set the agenda and shape the goals. You choose the areas to explore together with your coach.
-
Coaching is not therapy. Therapeutic or coounselling approaches are distinct and different from coaching’s methodology.
The coaching process however will address personal issues and life conditions that affect professional success. As a client, you make your own choices toward the realisation of your development, while accepting full responsibility for both your actions and decisions.
-
Coaching is not mentoring. Mentoring is great if you are specifically looking for advice or guidance from someone who has walked the path and knows the way. Coaching is designed to help leaders develop new leadership and life skills and self-awareness.
-
By creating a reflective space, coaching can help you or your team if there is some aspect of your current situation that you’d like to change for the better or some growth you would like to unlock.
Whether seeking improvements in work performance, envisioning the next chapter in your career/life, or dealing with a change that has been thrust upon you, partnering with a coach can be an effective way to build self-awareness, identify choices, and execute lasting changes that can transform your professional and personal life.
Your desired changes could be small and simple or may seem overwhelming right now, but you know you need to do something to improve on it. Examples of such changes may include:
Developing new leadership skills.
Refining existing leadership, communication, or other professional skills.
Changing behaviours that maybe derailing performance, productivity, or wellbeing.
Dealing with unhelpful mindsets/beliefs and creation of more helpful ones.
Enhancing mindfulness to assist with responsive rather than reactive behaviour.
Seeking to take the next step in your career and wanting to figure out ‘what’s next?
Contemplating a significant personal or professional change … disentangling what you really want career-wise from what seems immediately possible.
Striving to accomplish a significant personal or work goal e.g., physical, emotional, wellbeing, skill, or capability development.
Seeking more work/life balance and/or enhanced and healthier coping with stress and life’s challenges to increase vitality and wellbeing.
Developing higher levels of hope, resilience, mental toughness, compassion, empathy, trust, or achievement.
Increasing capacity to deal with organisational turbulence, complexity, uncertainty, and change.
Developing enhanced levels of confidence, creativity, innovation, and solution-focused thinking.
Seeking to understand your strengths (both of character and talent).
Seeking to achieve best possible self and increased levels of flourishing at home, work or in the community.
Or simply preparing for a job interview, or preparing a CV.

Each coaching plan includes agreed expectations and metrics to create evidence of the program’s effectiveness. Further coaches will evaluate progress periodically and mutually agree on continuing or concluding coaching. Formal feedback will be requested by the coach at the midpoint of the engagement (generally after session 4 or 5) and at the conclusion of the engagement to evaluate with you on how your coach is or has served your needs, value added, learnings, critical moments, coaching style – what worked, what needs to change?
I gained a deeper awareness of the thoughts and actions that prevent me from being the best version of myself.
“Through my time with Bob, I have gained a deeper awareness of the thoughts and actions that prevent me from being the best version of myself. While some learnt behaviours from my childhood have enabled my core strengths, others have caused me to question or doubt myself. Coaching with Bob has enabled me to understand this, and to recognise the signs so I can create more positive outcomes. I have become more accepting of some of the doubts I have and I’ve learnt to make small changes that will diminish their power.
Coaching with Bob commenced at a key point of change in my career and it helped me reconfirm my purpose and objectives. I have continued on my path of self-reflection and I really feel I am beginning to positively change my behaviours, which is improving my ability to reach my full potential.”

Why work with me as your coach
-
I am certified and qualified … I am an International Coach Federation (ICF), certified coach and a graduate of The Hudson Institute of Coaching, one of the world’s premier coaching schools. In addition to my specific coaching studies, as a coach I draw on several years of Doctoral studies in individual and organisational flourishing (including studying under world renown Professors David Cooperrider – the founder of Appreciative Inquiry, and Richard Boyatzis, Coaching supremo), an MBA, and two post grad Psychology degrees, including the world renown Master of Applied Psychology Program (MAPP) at UPENN with Professor Martin Seligman, the founder of Positive Psychology.
I have the decades of relevant experience … My qualifications combine with 45 years of practical experience in leadership roles and coaching at small, large, and complex organisations across many industries, cultures, and contexts (including business, military, public and private). Looking back my life has been about increasing people’s performance, compassion, use of strengths, resilience, and pursuit of best self. Specifically,
I have over 200 hours of one on one and group coaching since undertaking certification.
I have spent thousands of hours coaching leaders and teams across many contexts.
While at Accenture I initiated, sponsored, and contributed to, a yearlong Transformational Coaching program for selected executive Senior Managers run in conjunction with the Positivity Institute. The program ran under my leadership for 4 years and continues to this day post my retirement from Accenture. The program focused on individual flourishing as well as the collective development of our next generation of leadership. It consisted of one-on-one coaching, psychometric assessments, self and 360 feedback, knowledge sessions, and cohort connect sessions.
I designed and implemented a trust-based Ways of Working program for leadership teams at two large Global companies and have personally trained over 2000 Client and Accenture people and executive teams. The program focuses on positive interventions to enable teams and partnerships to flourish (feel good, function well and collaborate for the benefit of the whole).
In my travels I have worked or provided services/advice to the following companies … Accenture, Bristol Myers Squibb, Johnson and Johnson, Deutsch Bank, Lion Nathan, AMP, ASX, Telstra, Woolworths Group, Qantas, Australian Department of Defence, NZ Department of Defence, ANAO, Exxon Mobile, Caltex, Hoover, Southcorp Wines, General Foods, Campbells Arnott’s, TNT Logistics, David Jones, Energy Australia, Ausgrid, and Price Waterhouse amongst others.
I have the life experience … I have led and followed. I have been part of high-functioning teams and problematic relationships. I have celebrated successes and matured through failure. I have experienced major career transitions (from a 20-year military career to a successful 28-year business consulting career and most recently from 25 years at Accenture to retirement from my role of Chairman and CEO of the Australia and New Zealand business). Most importantly, I have learned and grown each step of the way.
I have a client centric approach focused on you the client and based on science and experience … In coaching assignments, I strive to build trust and respect between You (the Client) and Me (the Coach) quickly and I commit to bring my deep understanding of business at the executive level and life’s challenges at the personal level. When coaching I work at the intersection of positive psychology and business, and I leverage scientific research and practical experience to help you uncover hidden opportunity in your challenges and dreams to enhance your life experience, work performance and wellbeing.

Each coaching assignment starts with a chemistry check where the coach and client meet or set up a phone call to explore and discuss ‘chemistry’ and ‘fit’ and review contracting details. Here the client has an opportunity to assess the chemistry and fit with the proposed coach and to ask questions to clarify such.
In these sessions the coach assesses ‘coaching readiness’ i.e., do you understand what to expect from coaching? Are you ready to take on this work currently? Is the coaching issue or challenge clear? Do you understand relevant details, including time commitment, pricing, location, potential interviews, assessments, etc. For the engagement to proceed both coach and client need to agree chemistry is right, and both the client and coach make an intentional decision to proceed.
-
Unlike other advisory or mentoring relationships, the coach-client relationship is one of equal partners, based on mutual trust and respect, with you (the Client) being fully accountable for your own growth. You are the expert on your life and bring interesting challenges to the table. I (the Coach) will bring process and provocative ways of thinking that will illuminate the path between your current state and your desired future. Together, we will unearth what’s standing in your way, develop new strategies and action steps to move ahead, and track results.
It is my hope to serve as your trusted partner in facilitating deep transformational shifts that unlock your true purpose and your best self. Our coaching partnership is all about connecting you to that which brings you and you alone feelings of vitality, joy, passion and inspiration, engagement, meaning, positive relationships, and a sense of contribution and accomplishment. And you will walk away with a clear vision and plan for how you will take real, actionable steps toward building and sustaining lasting change in yourself in areas that are important to you. Should you be up to the challenge, this could be a transformational experience for you directed by your agenda.
I will support you in exploring new ways to view yourself, others, and situations. The work of self-discovery can be challenging, but when we approach this process together, with open minds and open hearts, it is always rewarding.

His mentorship was critical to building my confidence as a female leader to advocate for my career progression.
Over the course of 10+ years. Bob guided me through a journey that included developing and expanding trust-based relationships, recognizing and addressing bias and perceptions, discovering interests, uncovering and applying my strengths, and realizing my purpose and passions.
Bob’s unique breadth of personal and career experience made him a relevant coach through the twists and turns of my career and life journey. Coached by Bob, I optimized a diverse global Business Process Services footprint raising team member satisfaction and client delight through the implementation of process excellence, analytics and team member engagement strategies. Bob guided me through the origination and closure of many $100M+ deals across multiple domains, such as R&D, Finance and Procurement, integrating client-centric narratives, interest-based negotiations, and commercial deal shaping. His coaching aided me in the development of mid-level through C-Suite trusted relationships within my client’s organisations and in my own company.
Most importantly, Bob mentored me through the integration of my expanding family into my ongoing career progression. As the parent working outside of the home for 3 children, his mentorship was critical to building my confidence as a female leader to advocate for my ongoing career progression, where others might have expected me to step back.
My experiences and learnings from working with Bob remain key to my ongoing personal and career development. They have powered my progress and the progress of those who work for and with me. I am grateful that our journeys aligned.

There are no hard and fast rules about length of engagement or frequency of sessions and everyone’s situation is different.
Generally, an engagement is several months long with a minimum of 60-minute coaching sessions (longer durations may be required) every other week. Coaching sessions are offered via phone or video calls.
In some instances, sessions may be face-to-face, however the changes brought about by Covid 19 have shown that developing a strong coaching relationship that supports desirable change can be equally successful in a remote setting.
We have clients globally who access our services virtually.
In between sessions, you are entitled to emails, instant messages, and/or text support.
He helped me build stronger self-awareness, confidence, and focus with both my work and my family life.
“I have been fortunate to have Bob as a coach. Bob is always 100% present when we work together.
He draws upon real-life experiences and has an accommodating style that is both nurturing and challenging. Bob brings great natural wisdom that helps tease out what is important. He facilitates rather than tells and has an excellent toolkit introducing the right tool at the right point in the process. Bob is not at all formulaic and we also have a good laugh along the way.
He has helped me build stronger self-awareness, confidence, and focus with both my work and my family life.

Most definitely. We embrace partnering with you to design and develop program that needs or your organisation or team. We have delivered many customised programs of team coaching and draw on our experience to create a program specific to you.

Bob has helped me unpack the human aspect of business.
“Bob has been an instrumental part of my personal and professional growth. Coaching doesn’t just start and stop with Bob. He has played an active role in large and small career moments of mine.
In the past 13 years, Bob has never missed a call. He has supported my ideas and aspirations. He always challenged me and pushed my thinking. Bob has a unique ability to take a very complex business problem and simplify it. He asks hard questions to truly understand the root cause of the challenge and/or opportunity. In doing so, he has helped me unpack the human aspect of business.
He leads by example and demonstrates the importance of trust-based relationships. He showed me that asking for help was not a sign of weakness but required to achieve outcomes. I learned the importance of authenticity, creativity, and how to work as a team to achieve excellence.
Bob coached me to always do the right thing, even when no one was watching. I’ve changed my thinking on how I define ‘success’ through my coaching with Bob. He taught me not to compare myself to others, but only an earlier version of myself. I’m lucky to have evolved and grown under Bob’s coaching and leadership.
